Genetic counseling helps you to understand your possible hereditary risk of cancer and learn about your proactive options if any risk is detected. Many individuals are wondering how they can access Stamford Health’s genetic counseling services while sheltering in place during COVID-19. Here is what you need to know, according to our Department of Genetics.
Before COVID-19, I was thinking about meeting with a genetic counselor. Can I still do this?
Yes! While you may be hesitant to come to the genetic counseling office, we still encourage you to be proactive about your health while maintaining social distancing. We offer full, comprehensive services with a genetic counselor via telehealth.
How do telehealth visits work for cancer genetic counseling?
The same way as in-person visits, only via telephone or tablet. Once we work with you to arrange your telehealth visit, we will discuss your personal and family history of cancer. You will get an initial assessment and then we can discuss the possibility of genetic testing if you are interested.
Can I still do genetic testing during COVID-19?
Yes! If you’re interested in genetic testing, we will have the lab send you a saliva collection kit or you can schedule a time to come to our office for a blood draw when you feel more comfortable.
- The at-home kit comes with specific instructions for sample collection and for labeling—it’s easy.
- For your convenience, the lab will also provide you with a FedEx bag and label for shipping your sample back to the lab.
- The only extra step you have to take is to call FedEx and arrange for a contactless pick-up of your sample, right from your home, at no cost to you.
