Total Joint Replacement

Comprehensive and compassionate care for joint pain relief.

Our Approach

Total joint replacement surgery is one of the most successful orthopedic surgeries performed each year, providing patients with the latest advances and good outcomes. Our Total Joint Replacement Program offers a full range of interdisciplinary care to help get you back to your daily life as soon as possible.

Many of our orthopedic surgeons have fellowship training and specialize in the complex joint replacement procedures.

Our surgeons use the newest, most advanced cross-linked polyethylene joints to allow for natural movement of the joint.

In our unique and ongoing collaboration with Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS), patients have easy access to the best in orthopedic care from HSS and Stamford Health right here in Connecticut.

Types Of Total Joint Replacement Offered

TOTAL KNEE REPLACEMENT

Surgeons remove the damaged portion of the bone and replace it with an artificial surface, also known as a component or prosthetic, that is best suited to your needs.

TOTAL HIP REPLACEMENT

In order to repair the ball and socket structure of the hip, a new “ball” and “cup” are inserted and held in place by new bone growth, cement-like material, or screws.

TOTAL SHOULDER REPLACEMENT

Surgeons may either replace the ball and socket of the shoulder or only the ball. Your surgeon will determine what option is best for your shoulder problem.

What to Expect During Your Hospital Stay

  • PREPARING FOR SURGERY
  • WHAT TO EXPECT DAY OF SURGERY
  • RECOVERING IN THE HOSPITAL

Before You Come to the Hospital

The road to recovery begins before your surgery. We are here to support you. Help us help you by raising any medical concerns with your surgeon and any unresolved administrative issues (such as insurance coverage) with your surgeon’s office manager. Your active participation in treatment, with full understanding of all issues, is vital to your successful recovery.

  • Visit your primary care physician and any specialists as indicated prior to your surgery to discuss steps to take for a successful recovery. This may include quitting smoking, avoiding alcohol, and discontinuing certain medications or supplements, as directed.
  • Following initial pre-surgical tests and consultation with your primary care physician, you’ll be scheduled for additional screening through our Pre-Surgical Optimization Program (POP) required for every person having a total joint replacement.
  • Your surgeon may advise you on a specific diet prior to your surgery. This may include changes to nutritional or herbal supplements or following a clear fluid diet before surgery. Ask your surgeon if you’re unclear about what is OK to consume or not.
  • While pain may limit your physical activity before surgery, there may be specific exercises to do to aid in an easier recovery. Your doctor or surgeon will be able to help you determine which exercise program is most beneficial.

Your Pre-Surgery Arrival

Upon checking into the registration desk, members of the perioperative team will greet and escort you and your loved one to the fifth floor of the hospital. There, you will complete the admission process with the perioperative team.

  • Once admitted, you will meet with members of your surgical team and members of the anesthesia team to discuss the procedure with you. We encourage all questions so that you are comfortable before your surgery begins.
  • Total joint replacement surgery typically takes around 1 ½ hours, but the actual elapsed time from operating room to post-anesthesia care unit is usually about 2 ½ hours.

For Your Recovery in the Hospital

Once you are transported to the inpatient unit, members of your health care team, including your anesthesiologist, nurses, pain management specialists, physical and occupational therapists, and physician assistants, will plan, provide, and monitor your care.

  • Our pain management team is available to support your recovery with a personalized treatment plan.
  • Your rehabilitation program will start the day of your surgery.
  • Our goal is for you to be discharged directly home safely following your total joint replacement. In some cases, you may need additional services depending on your progress. Your interdisciplinary team will help you to determine the next steps and advise you on available resources.

Hear From Our Patients

After a total reverse shoulder replacement and three months of physical therapy at HSS Rehab at Tully Health Center, Arleene is back to walking, taking the stairs, and tossing a ball overhand to her grandson.
Jonathan Hart was using a walk to get around, but after having his left hip replaced – he has no pain and can move much more easily.
