Breast Health & Mammogram FAQs

  • What services does the Odyssey Group Breast Center offer?

The Stamford Health Breast Center offers a comprehensive range of services to support breast health. These services include:

Our dedicated team of experts is committed to providing high-quality care, early detection, diagnosis, and personalized treatment plans for all breast health concerns.

  • At what age should I start getting regular mammograms and breast screenings?

The recommended age for average risk women to begin mammograms is 40 years old. It is important to have a mammogram annually.

We recommend baseline mammograms at 35 for average risk women, and there are laws in NY and CT to support this. This is important in light of the rise in early onset breast cancers.

For patients with elevated risk, breast screenings may begin sooner. If you have a family history of breast cancer or other risk factors, it is essential to discuss your screening schedule with your health care provider. They can help determine if and when to start screening earlier, and whether MRI should be added as well.

  • What are the different types of breast imaging and their purposes?

There are several types of breast imaging, each serving specific purposes:

    • 3D Mammography: Used for breast cancer screening and diagnosis. 3D images enhance the detection of abnormalities.
    • Breast ultrasound:
    • Supplements mammography for screening in women with dense breast tissue.
    • Useful for further evaluating breast lumps or abnormalities found during mammography.
    • Breast MRI: used to complement mammography. Offers highly sensitive images and is often used in high-risk cases or to assess specific breast concerns.
    • Biopsies and minimally invasive procedures: Procedures to assess breast imaging abnormalities for diagnostic purposes.

Your health care provider will recommend the appropriate imaging based on your specific needs and medical history.

  • Can men also receive breast care and screenings at the Odyssey Group Breast Center?
Absolutely. While breast cancer is less common in men, it can still occur. The Breast Center welcomes men for breast care and screenings. If you have concerns about breast health or have noticed any unusual changes in your breast tissue, our experienced team can provide screenings, evaluations, and consultations to ensure your health and well-being.
  • How can I schedule an appointment at Stamford Health?

Scheduling an appointment is easy. You can do so by:

Our staff is here to assist you, answer any questions, and work with you to find a convenient time for your visit. We understand the importance of timely screenings and will make every effort to accommodate your schedule.

  • How do radiologists use AI technology to enhance reads?
Our radiologists care about your safety and we are pleased to use Transpara, an artificial intelligence (AI) technology, during your mammogram to enhance reads. AI reviews each image for tiny spots or areas that your radiologist might want to look at more closely and helps your radiologist focus on the parts of the image that are most important for keeping you healthy. It’s like a second set of eyes. It has been clinically and scientifically proven in several studies that when working together, radiologists using AI have higher cancer detection and efficiency.
