Stamford Health Launches a Comprehensive Center for BRCA & Genetic Health

The center will care for patients who have been diagnosed with a genetic mutation or who want to pursue genetic testing

STAMFORD, CT / September 3, 2024 – Today, Stamford Health announced its new Center for BRCA & Genetic Health, which serves both men and women who have been diagnosed with a genetic mutation or who want to pursue genetic testing and treatment. The Center is made up of a multidisciplinary team of board-certified genetic counselors and geneticists who work collaboratively with experts at Stamford Health’s Women’s Specialty Center, Breast Center and Carl & Dorothy Bennett Cancer Center to provide patients with tailored risk assessments, recommendations, treatment and support.

“Understanding and navigating a genetic mutation can be overwhelming,” said Sarah Cate, MD, Chief of Breast Surgery and Co-Director of Stamford Health’s Breast Center. “Our team brings together experts in genetics, gastroenterology, gynecologic oncology, endocrinology, plastic surgery and other fields to interpret complex genetic information. Patients receive extensive insight and a personalized plan to help them make choices in support of long-term health and well-being.

Patients are assessed for a variety of health conditions and offered testing options. Clinicians review genetic test results with patients and offer support and counsel to help individuals make informed decisions to best support their health. Inheriting a genetic mutation leads to an increased risk of breast, ovarian, pancreatic, and prostate cancers. The Center treats a variety of genetic mutations including BRCA1, BRCA2, PALB2, CHEK2, MSH2, CDH2, BRIP 1, RAD51C, ATM, TP53, MLH1 and more.

Other features of the Comprehensive Center for BRCA & Genetic Health include nurse navigators to coordinate care including scheduling screenings and facilitating appointments, providing preventative screening recommendations based on risk and establishing future screening planning. Patients can access cutting-edge clinical trials through Stamford Health’s collaboration with Dana-Farber Brigham Cancer Center. Those who require surgery benefit from the latest advances in risk reducing surgical techniques, such as nipple sparing mastectomies, with direct to implant reconstruction, as well as autologous reconstruction.
