Stamford Health's Endoscopy Center Receives National Recognition for Quality and Safety

Published: October 04, 2018

Stamford, CT/October 4, 2018 – Stamford Health’s Endoscopy Center has recently been recognized by The American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (ASGE), a leading gastrointestinal medical society, as part of its program specifically dedicated to promoting quality in endoscopy in all settings where it is practiced in the United States. Stamford Health’s Endoscopy Unit is one of more than 400 to be granted the honor since 2009.

Stamford Health’s Endoscopy Center is recognized as a GI Center of Excellence by the Society of Gastroenterologists National Association. The center offers high-tech endoscopy screening tests and every procedure is staffed by a physician and two specially trained endoscopy nurses. Its collaborative model of care means that if anything unusual is found during a procedure, consultations with a pathologist, surgeon or genetic counselor can easily and quickly be facilitated.

The ASGE Endoscopy Unit Recognition Program honors endoscopy units that have demonstrated a commitment to patient safety and quality in endoscopy as evidenced by meeting the program’s rigorous criteria, which includes following the ASGE guidelines on privileging, quality assurance, endoscope reprocessing, CDC infection control guidelines and ensuring endoscopy staff competency.

“We are extremely honored to be recognized by ASGE,” said Faith Dorio, Executive Director of Perioperative Services. “The entire staff in the Endoscopy Unit is committed to providing the best and highest quality care for our patients and this recognition only further validates that all of our efforts are making a difference.”

To be recognized by ASGE, a unit, through a peer-reviewed application process, must attest to the continued competence of all staff relative to their roles, demonstrate the adoption of unit policies specific to ongoing assessment of performance relative to key quality indicators, and attest that the unit has established infrastructure and personnel dedicated to infection control and prevention. The program is applicable to all settings in the United States, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands where endoscopy is practiced, including office-based endoscopy units, hospital-based endoscopy units, and stand-alone ambulatory endoscopy or surgery centers.
