Podiatry – Foot & Ankle Care
Podiatry is the medical specialty focused on care of the foot and ankle, including not only the muscles, tendons and bones, but also the skin and nails. These are complicated body parts: Each foot has 26 bones (that’s 25% of the bones in your body), 33 joints and more than 100 muscles, tendons and ligaments.
Foot and ankle pain can have many causes, including birth defects; illness, such as diabetes, and injury (traumatic, stress or overuse). Podiatrists work to alleviate foot and ankle ailments and to educate patients on caring for their feet to prevent injury and pain.
