Stamford Hospital Awarded Spring 2023 ‘A’ Hospital Safety Grade from Leapfrog Group

Grade reflects top national performance on patient safety.

STAMFORD, CT, May 3, 2023 – Announced today, Stamford Hospital received an “A” Hospital Safety Grade from The Leapfrog Group for Spring 2023. Of the 28 hospitals in Connecticut, Stamford Hospital was one of 12 to receive an ‘A’ rating. This national distinction celebrates Stamford Hospital’s achievements in prioritizing patient safety by protecting patients from preventable harm.

“This achievement underscores the expert, compassionate care our caregivers and staff provide to our patients every day,” stated Dr. Rohit Bhalla, MD, MPH, Senior Vice President and Chief Clinical and Quality Officer at Stamford Health. “In addition to this recognition from Leapfrog, our commitment to patient safety and high-quality care is demonstrated by our favorable performance on other quality programs and report cards, including the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) Overall Quality Star Rating and Readmission Reduction programs, U.S. News & World Report, Joint Commission, and other clinical specialty recognition programs.”

The Leapfrog Group, an independent national watchdog organization, assigns an “A,” “B,” “C,” “D” or “F” grade to general hospitals across the country based on over thirty national performance measures reflecting errors, accidents, injuries, and infections, as well as systems hospitals have in place to prevent harm.

“At Stamford Health, our vision is to be the most trusted healthcare partner for the communities we serve, and this recognition advances that work,” added President and CEO, Kathleen Silard. “I would like to express my gratitude to our teams across the organization for their steadfast dedication to person-centered care and high-quality outcomes.”

The Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade is the only hospital ratings program based exclusively on hospital prevention of medical errors and harm to patients. The grading system is peer-reviewed, fully transparent and free to the public. Grades are updated twice annually, in the fall and spring.

“This new update of Hospital Safety Grades shows that, at the national level, we saw deterioration in patient safety with the pandemic,” said Leah Binder, president and CEO of The Leapfrog Group. “But this hospital received an ‘A’ despite those challenges. I congratulate all the leaders, staff, volunteers and clinicians who together made that possible.”
