Stamford Health Performs First Procedure in Nation Using Sonata® System to Treat Uterine Fibroids
STAMFORD, CT/September 3, 2019 – Stamford Health has performed the first procedure in the U.S. to treat uterine fibroids using the Sonata® system. This advanced technology uses an ultrasound probe, which is inserted through the cervix and into the uterus. Once the fibroid is identified, radiofrequency ablation is applied directly to the fibroid without damaging the surrounding tissue.
Uterine fibroids are a very common benign condition faced by 25-50% of American women. Symptoms commonly include abnormal bleeding, pelvic pain or pressure and urinary issues such as an increase in frequency or urgency. The majority of women are usually diagnosed in their mid-30s or early 40s, though the condition can impact women in their 20s as well. Many women do not seek treatment because they are afraid they will need a hysterectomy.
“We have always been looking to give women options that go beyond removing her entire uterus to alleviate the many painful and challenging symptoms caused by fibroids,” said Scott Chudnoff, MD, Chair of the Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology at Stamford Health. “Now with the use of this technology, we can perform a same-day procedure that not only avoids a hysterectomy, but also eliminates having to make any incision at all, so this really is a game-changer for women who suffer with fibroids.”“We have always been looking to give women options that go beyond removing her entire uterus to alleviate the many painful and challenging symptoms caused by fibroids,” said Scott Chudnoff, MD, Chair of the Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology at Stamford Health. “Now with the use of this technology, we can perform a same-day procedure that not only avoids a hysterectomy, but also eliminates having to make any incision at all, so this really is a game-changer for women who suffer with fibroids.”
