As the steel structure of the new hospital is beginning to appear in the Stamford skyline, Stamford Hospital recently completed full transfer of all utilities to its new Central Utility Plant, which is now providing power, steam and chilled and hot water to the entire facility.
This represents a major milestone in the development of the new Stamford Hospital, with the Facilities Management staff now operating the new fully automated and highly energy efficient 33,500 BGSF (building gross square foot) plant. It also includes a number of built-in redundancies, as well as significant back-up generation power. The old Boiler House will be dismantled, with much of the larger components being recycled.
The new Stamford Hospital, estimated to cost $450 million, is scheduled to be completed in 2016 and will provide a first-class healthcare center to local residents as well as those in neighboring communities. Some features of the new hospital include:
- New patient care units with all private rooms and private bathrooms, as well as centralized nurses’ stations for more flexible care delivery;
- A 45,600-square-foot Emergency Department with separate treatment areas for trauma, cardiac, urgent, behavioral health and pediatric patients; dedicated and easily accessible parking; and individual points of entry for walk-in and ambulance arrivals;
- Significantly larger surgical suites to accommodate the latest technology;
- A new Pediatric Unit in the Whittingham Pavilion adjacent to the current Neonatal Intensive Care Unit to centralize mother-child services;
- An expanded ICU with 24 beds (emphasizing the Hospital’s commitment to critical care and tertiary services); and
- A centralized location for all Heart & Vascular Institute services, including electrophysiology, catheterization and interventional Labs
