New Hybrid Operating Room Opens

Published: February 07, 2013

Stamford Hospital has opened a new versatile and efficient hybrid operating room (OR) that enables a multidisciplinary team of heart, vascular and interventional specialists to provide both complex and minimally invasive procedures on a patient in the same operative setting.

The new “hybrid OR” offers the latest technology in vascular imaging, allowing the Hospital to expands its capabilities to provide open, minimally invasive, image-guided and catheter-based procedures in one room. It is particularly beneficial for patients who require multiple cardiac and vascular procedures, since it eliminates the need to transfer a patient to another surgery room if deemed necessary in the midst of a procedure.

“The new hybrid OR permits the seamless conversion of minimally invasive to open procedures,” said Dr. Michael Coady, Stamford Hospital’s Chief of Cardiac Surgery. “It allows us to provide all the treatments that fit a patient’s specific needs at the same time, thereby improving our efficiency and patient outcomes.”

As interventional technology becomes integrated into cardiovascular surgery, the ability of angiographic imaging capabilities in the OR is increasingly essential. The hybrid OR essentially gives surgeons access to a cardiac catheterization lab and radiology suite in the OR since diagnostic, intraoperative and postoperative imaging can be performed right in the operating room. A surgeon is able to position Artis zeego®, a multi-axis C-arm system, virtually anywhere around the patient to produce new types of clinical images.

“The hybrid OR really offers the latest technology in vascular imaging,” said Vascular Surgeon Dr. Timothy Manoni. “Before, all the best imaging technology was outside the OR, so you would have to bring complex surgical patients to other areas of the hospital, which isn’t as comfortable or efficient as doing it in the operating room.”
