to achieve excellence across four or more key quality care areas
The Joint Commission, the leading accreditor of healthcare organizations in the United States, named Stamford Hospital as a 2013 Top Performer on Key Quality Measures®. Only 19 percent of Joint Commission-accredited hospitals across the U.S. were recognized for achieving excellence in four or more key areas. Stamford Hospital was recognized for attaining and sustaining excellence across a number of medical and surgical care measures, specifically in Heart Attack, Heart Failure, Pneumonia and Surgical Care. It is the only hospital in lower Fairfield County, and one of only six in Connecticut, to receive this recognition for 2013.
“This achievement demonstrates Stamford Hospital’s commitment to assuring evidence-based interventions are delivered to our patients in the most appropriate way, and helps to advance the care we provide our communities,” said Rohit Bhalla, MD, MPH, Vice President of Quality and Chief Quality Officer at Stamford Hospital. “We are proud to be recognized by the Joint Commission as it demonstrates how a strong group effort across our entire organization can ensure a high level of quality and patient safety is maintained.”
The recognition was announced in conjunction with the Joint Commission’s release of its 2014 annual report “America’s Hospitals: Improving Quality and Safety.” The Top Performer program recognizes hospitals for improving performance on evidence-based interventions that increase the chances of healthy outcomes for patients with certain conditions, including heart attack; heart failure; pneumonia; surgical care; children’s asthma; stroke; venous thromboembolism and perinatal care; inpatient psychiatric services; and immunizations.
The 2014 Joint Commission report summarizes the performance of over 3,300 Joint Commission-accredited hospitals on measures of evidence-based care linked to better patient outcomes. The measures that the Joint Commission uses to make its determination relate to care processes across an organization, including measures of care assessments, timeliness of interventions, appropriateness of medication use, patient safety, infection prevention and patient education. To achieve the Top Performer designation, Stamford Hospital needed to achieve 95 percent or higher performance on each of 20 individual measures across four areas of care for the entire year. Stamford Hospital was among 37 percent of hospitals in the United States to achieve the 2013 Top Performer distinction in one or more areas.
“Delivering the right treatment in the right way at the right time is a cornerstone of high-quality healthcare. I commend the efforts of Stamford Hospital for its excellent performance on the use of evidence-based interventions,” said Mark R. Chassin, M.D., FACP, M.P.P., M.P.H., President and CEO, The Joint Commission.
