Focus on Rekindling Joy, Restoring Wellness at Annual Bennett Cancer Center Survivor Symposium

Published: May 20, 2015

Happiness, serenity, meaning, health and general well-being are just some of the qualities we tend to want most in our lives and yet, in the presence of a cancer diagnosis, they can seem elusive, if not impossible to find. Stamford Hospital will welcome Maria Sirois, PsyD, to discuss ways to cope with the emotional stress of a cancer diagnosis during the 6th Annual Survivorship Symposium on Wednesday, June 10, from 6 – 8 p.m. at the Tully Health Center in Stamford. Dr. Sirois is an inspirational speaker, consultant, and licensed clinical psychologist who has worked in the fields of wellness and positive psychology for twenty years.

Attendees will have an opportunity to explore techniques that support the rekindling of calm, happiness and a sense of uplift in life, even when suffering and worry are present. Dr. Sirois will also discuss research emerging from the fields of positive psychology and mind-body medicine that help to increase both resilience and joy. Guests will leave with a renewed sense of positivity, as well as tools that can be easily implemented at home to bolster their capacity to enjoy life.

The Survivorship Symposium is part of the Bennett Cancer Center’s Transitions: Choices in Recovery program and is free to all area cancer patients and survivors. Space is limited, so pre-registration is required. Call 1.877.233.WELL (9355) to register.

The Survivorship Symposium and Transitions: Choices in Recovery program are just two of a number of vital cancer support programs and services that are made possible by the Hope in Motion initiative and its signature event, the annual Walk & Run. Other support options offered by the Bennett Cancer Center include an integrative medicine program (including massage, Reflexology, Reiki, yoga and Tai Chi); individual, family and group therapy; genetic counseling; exercise programs; nutritional counseling; and survivorship programs to enhance the natural healing capacities of the body and mind.

The 20th annual Walk & Run will take place this year on Sunday, June 7, in downtown Stamford’s Columbus Park. Supporters looking for more information about Hope in Motion or to participate in the Walk & Run event can visit www.hopeinmotion.org or contact Kari Pollak at [email protected].
