The Facts

Staying informed is vital to your breast health. Scroll through for quick facts.
  • Connecticut has the highest incidence of breast cancer in the country. The good news? Mammography has helped reduce breast cancer deaths in the U.S. by 30 percent since 1990.
  • Women really should begin yearly mammography screenings at age 40. The risk of breast cancer increases significantly beginning at this age and continues to rise as you get older.
  • You’re never “too old” to get a mammogram. We recommend that women over 70 continue to get annual mammograms as long as her general health is good.
  • Take time to take care:
    • Don’t let financial concerns stop you. Through the support of community grants, Stamford Hospital is able to provide mammograms to anyone who is uninsured or whose insurance does not cover breast cancer screening, as long as you qualify.
    • Don’t let being too busy be an excuse for skipping your yearly mammogram. For your convenience, Stamford Hospital offers evening and weekend appointments with results given the next business day.

I felt completely healthy. My mammogram saved my life.”

No one knows why I had breast cancer. I’ve always taken care of myself, there’s no family history, no risk factors at all. But there it was.

At 70, I thought I was too old for a mammogram. I’m glad my doctor didn’t. That was 10 years ago, and I’m still here to see my grandchildren grow up.

I was surprised to find out that one in every six women diagnosed with breast cancer is in her 40s. And even more surprised to be one of them.
