Sharon C. Kiely, MD, MPM, FACP Named Associate Dean of Columbia University
Vagelos College of Physicians & Surgeons at Stamford Hospital
STAMFORD, CT/March 6, 2018 –Medical education is an important piece of the fabric at Stamford Health and is a passion of Dr. Sharon Kiely’s, who was recently appointed Associate Dean of Columbia University Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons (Columbia P&S) for the Stamford Hospital Affiliation. Dr. Kiely joined Stamford Health in 2010 as the hospital’s first Vice President & Chief Quality Officer and in 2011 was named to her current position of Senior Vice President, Medical Affairs & Chief Medical Officer. In her additional role as Associate Dean, Dr. Kiely is now also responsible for the affiliation with Columbia P&S and the learning environment for all medical students and over 70 resident physicians’ on the Stamford campus.

As a major teaching affiliate of Columbia P&S, Stamford Health has educated thousands of Columbia’s medical students for more than 20 years. Importantly, more than 100 doctors at Stamford Hospital hold faculty teaching appointments at Columbia P&S.
Medical students are assigned to four of the hospital’s clinical departments – Family Medicine, Internal Medicine, Obstetrics & Gynecology and Surgery – and at any given time, about 20 or more Columbia P&S students are participating in educational experiences under the supervision of the teaching faculty physicians. Stamford Hospital also provides students with shuttle transportation to the New York campus, on site housing and meals.
The position of Associate Dean was previously held by Dr. Noel Robin, who retired in January after serving as the hospital’s Chair of the Department of Medicine for 45 years. Dr. Robin continues to remain a member of the medical staff as Emeritus Chair of the Department of Medicine, as a teacher and preceptor in the endocrine clinic.
Dr. Kiely added, “Dr. Robin is an inspiring individual who has impacted generations of doctors in our education programs for medical students and resident physician training programs. We are indebted to him for laying this solid foundation for education and learning.”
Dr. Kiely graduated from Georgetown University School of Medicine and is board-certified in internal medicine. She practiced primary care internal medicine for over 23 years. Dr. Kiely’s career has been focused on education, patient safety and physician engagement and wellbeing. She previously worked as a White House Fellow in the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services and in advisory roles for government agencies, related to health care policy and organ transplantation.
